The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has written a letter to the state government urging them to stop the doctors from all pathies i.e. homeopathy, Ayurveda and Unani to prescribe allopathic drugs. This step was taken by MARD in order to curb the rampant problem of antibiotics resistance in the state.

Dr Sagar Mundada, president of MARD, said, "People belonging to these different pathies are also prescribing allopathic drugs. They do not know when, what and where should they prescribe such drugs. This could lead to antibiotics resistance. They have not studied these medications as much as we have and therefore have less knowledge about these drugs,"

Health experts fear that India's excessive antibiotic usage is leading to rare mutation within bacteria. They say that if cross pathy still continues then the problem of antibiotic resistance would go through the roof within the next few years.

"Allopaths prescribe steroids when it is the last option. However, in rural areas, these doctors prescribe steroids as regular medication. It could have a euphoric effect on the patients, therefore, they could come back for more which may lead to many side-effects. This could lead to antibiotic resistance which is a serious problem. If this is not tended to, even the smallest of infections or fevers could result in fatalities," said Mundada.

The Delhi medical council and the Delhi High Court have recently upheld the decision of not allowing cross pathy. The government also plans on charging a fine of Rs20,000 and imprisonment.

Dr Jayesh Lele, president, Indian Medical Association (IMA), said "I completely support this cause. IMA has been fighting for this issue since last 7 to 8 years. We fully support the court's judgement on banning crosspathy.

Wrongful prescriptions could lead to antibiotic resistance among many other problems. They have no experience in allopathy, therefore, they do not know about the prescription requirements. We still have cases and review petitions pending regarding this issue."
