In less than two weeks of uploading a rendition of their debut music video, Sar Jo Tera Chakraye, Aflatunes, a beatbox and a capella music band has garnered more than 10,000 views on Youtube and still growing.
As quirky as the name sounds, Aflatunes is a wobbly derivative from the Urdu word aflatoon meaning eccentric, curious, multi-dimensional and distorted. True to their name, this eight-member, no-instrument band features multi-genre mashup geared to pack a punch and make people wonder whether those beats are really coming from the voice-box.

The band is not limited by equipment, genre or language and can mix and mashup dubstep with Carnatic classical, pop with retro seamlessly into their compositions. "We recently performed at an event conducted by Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT). One of the distinguished guests at the event was Bollywood star Aamir Khan, who grooved to Sar Jo Tera Chakraye. Rakesh Maria, the Commissioner of Mumbai Police congratulated us too," beams Aflatune band member Anish Nair. "One of my friends told me about Aflatunes and when I saw their performance I was blown away," says Bandra resident Sumedh Sawant, "These guys have amazing talent."

The idea for the band was coined by Navarun Roy, one of the finest beatboxers in India. He tagged along with Anish Nair, who has a flair for making no-instruments vocal arrangements. A simple post on a facebook wall beckoned other talented musicians to join in and thus Aflatunes was created. Khar resident Aranya Johar was browsing through the social media site, VOTP India, and stumbled upon Aflatune's music video. She says, "I love how the singers have a voice range that sounds impressive and unique when they are incorporating different genres while beat-boxing and singing harmonies."

The band comprises Navarun Roy, an electronics engineer by day and an electro/bass heavy beat-boxer and rap vocalist by night; Anish, a freelance voice-over/dubbing artist and musician; Ruchi, a final year BMS student, who fills in as a vocalist; Danny, a bboy dancer and the tempo-bearer of the band; Jenny, an intermediate rhythm guitarist and classical pianist, who takes on tenor and string section; Aruna, a trained Hindustani/Carnatic classical vocalist and a full-time musician and teacher, who takes on lead vocals and harmonies for the band; Jaimish, who takes up sample/synth duties along with Roy and finally, Nilay, who takes on vocal percussion.
