The Sessions court on Thursday convicted a 24-year-old for stabbing a 16-year-old girl in Powai after she did not respond to his advances, and sentenced the man to four years of rigorous imprisonment.

The court presided by Justice S G Dige also slapped a fine of Rs1,000 on convict Jainal Sardaar.

The prosecution case is that Sardaar, who was employed with a plastic products company, had attacked the college student on March 23, 2013 after she refused to have a love affair with him.

According to assistant public prosecutor, advocate Deepak Lade, "Sardaar liked the victim and he had somehow managed to get her number. He would keep calling her at odd hours and stalk her."

Lade said that the girl had also complained about Sardaar's overtures to her father, following which he had warned the youth several times. However, few days before the incident, Sardaar had visited the girl's college and asked to elope with him.

Enraged at Sardaar's offer, the girls had slapped him in front of her friends. That's when Sardaar decided the take revenge. On March 23, Sardaar stabbed the student with a pair of scissors, said Lade. "Fortunately, the girl received timely medical aid. It took several months for her to recover as the wounds were deep," said Lade. He added that the prosecution examined 12 witnesses, including the victim, during the trial and all of them had testified against Sardaar.
