Sozzled cop drops rifle from local, booked in Mumbai

A constable attached with the Government Railway Police (GRP) headquarters was suspended and booked for negligence after he lost his rifle while he was on duty in the ladies compartment of a Kasara-bound train. The constable was also allegedly drunk at the time. The Kalyan GRP initially registered a missing complaint, but after they found out that he was drunk when he dropped the firearm, they lodged a complaint against him.

According to the Kalyan GRP, Ramesh Deore was assigned escort duty in a ladies compartment of a Kasara-bound local on November 3. The incident took place at around 11 pm, when Deore was standing near the compartment door and allegedly dropped his .303 riffle between Khardi and Kasara stations.

Deore immediately reported the incident to Kalyan GRP, which registered a missing complaint and started their probe. However, during the probe the officials realised that Deore was hiding facts and was smelling of alcohol. He was immediately sent for a blood test, whose reports are still awaited.

"Deore was placed under suspension after a default report has been sent and a case was registered against him on November 11. There will be a departmental inquiry against him and based on it, further action will be taken," said Ritesh Aher, GRP spokesperson.

Deore has been booked for negligent conduct with respect to machinery and for endangering the lives or personal safety of others. The police are still searching for the weapon.
