South Mumbai to get face identification cameras to nab suspects

The face identification cameras will enable the police to conduct crackdowns and surveillance of suspects in the city.

The Mumbai police department is all set to install face identification cameras in south Mumbai. In the first phase, three high definition cameras will be installed which will be directly linked to the Emergency Response and Mobile Surveillance Control and Command Centre of Mumbai police department. The cameras will be remotely controlled and will have backup data of suspects and crooks.

The face identification cameras will enable the police to conduct crackdowns and surveillance of suspects in the city. The ambitious project of the Mumbai police will have a data center of suspects and crooks which will bring the suspects in the police radar with their facial features. The digitization of the data belonging to terror suspects and crooks is in the last phase which will help enable the police to merge the data to link it with the cameras.

"The face identification cameras will be of major use to keep a strict vigil on the city roads and to monitor terror suspects and anti-social elements moving around in the city. Three cameras will be installed in the first phase at Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty and near Mantralaya," said a senior police officer from Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

"The face identification camera works on the facial features of the person which is stored in the data. As soon as any suspect comes in the radar of the camera, the police control room and the surveillance vehicle will be alerted.", said the officer.

"Also we will have the mobile face identification cameras which will be used during religious processions in the city. It will enable the police to control law and order situation.", said the officer.

Pravinkumar Padwal, Additional Commissioner of Police for South Region said, "The project of face identification camera is in the process. We will get it installed soon in South Mumbai."
