Four persons were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly abducting two diamond merchants from a market in south Mumbai. The arrested accused have been identified as Shabir Khan, Akram Sheikh, Laxman and Babu.

According to the police, the kidnapping was carried out following systematic planning done by the main accused, Shabir, a resident of Rajasthan's Rajkot area. The police said Shabir gave a Rs 10 lakh loan to the complainant, one Anil Rathod, a trader working in the city's diamond market, while he also held behind two other workers as witnesses.

Of the loan amount, the trader returned Rs 6 lakh plus interest, while the remainder was being delayed due to some reason. The delay in returning the remainder amount infuriated Shabir, who then kidnapped the two traders who were with him.

But while the accused and the two merchants were travelling in the former's vehicle (MH 02 BD 5353), the duo shouted out aloud to attract attention and tried to get out of the moving vehicle. One of the merchants, identified as Dinesh Shah, raised a hue and cry from inside the vehicle.

This suspicious movement drew the attention of an on duty traffic constable, Pramod Padman, who immediately informed the control room. Upon intercepting the wireless message, police constable Santosh Jagdale of the Gamdevi Police blocked the vehicle near the Karamikal junction, following which the accused were nabbed and the two merchants was rescued safely.

Following the arrest, the accused were handed over to the DB Marg police station and have been remanded to police custody till Friday.

“Shabir is a businessman from Rajasthan, and we are gathering more information about him and the other arrested accused. As of now, all four arrested persons have been charged under sections 385 (putting a person in fear of injury), 387 and 170 (impersonating a public servant), and 363 (punishment for kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code. We are investigating the case from all possible angles, and necessary action is being taken,” said a police officer from the DB Marg police station.
