Juhu Beach to get an amphitheatre, walkway and benches to beautify the food court area of the beach. Interestingly, it isn't the civic body who will be developing the beach area but Mumbai Slum Improvement Board (MSIB), that is supposed to look after slums in the city, would develop the beach.

"The work is being undertaken on the recommendation of the local elected representative through suburban collector," said an official from MSIB. He added, "that the Collectorate will be giving funds for the beautification work."

However, observers explained that it is the urban local body like Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) who should be taking up the work of constructing and beautifying the beach and not the agency that is involved with betterment of slums and living condition of slum-dwellers.

As per the plans, an amphitheatre will be made on the open space adjoining the food court area of Juhu Beach apart from having a walking track next to the existing Santa Cruz police chowky. Additionally, the open area below Shivaji's statue too will be beautified with plants, grass, bushes, etc. along with installation of benches for visitors to this tourist spot of Mumbai.

All these three locations selected by the Board do not or never had slums in the recent past, thereby raising questions on why the MSIB is taking up the task by spending an estimated Rs1.60 crore when BMC is India's richest civic body with the latest budget being at Rs37,052 crore.

The official claimed that all these three projects should be ready before 2017's monsoon as work order is likely to be issued in March and at the moment bidding process is underway. Once the project is ready, it is likely to be handed over to the BMC for maintenance and upkeep.
