In a possible first for the city, a state board school in Sion, DS High School, has launched a centre to cater to the needs of students with learning disabilities where they will be pre-assessed and given remedial coaching by a group of experts. While the centre is within the school's premises to be accessed by the school's 3,500 students, the centre is also open to students from other schools in the vicinity.

The centre is headed by Dr Sumit Shinde, occupational therapist and managing director of Child Learning Centre for learning disabilities. Dr Shinde said, "In today's scenario it is important that schools come up with such centres that will cater to children with special needs. Within two months we have identified 200 students who will now be pre-assessed by our experts and given remedial coaching. It is important that children with special needs are assessed and given remedial coaching at an early stage."

The centre will remain open for in-house students from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm and for students coming from other schools it will be open in the same premises from 6 pm to 10 pm. The learning centre, along with Dr Shinde, is being run by experts like a clinical psychologist, speech therapist, counseling psychologist, remedial educators and physiologist.

Rajendra Pradhan, President, Shiv Shikshan Sanstha's DS High School, said, "When children with special needs go to government hospitals, they have to wait in long queues and get appointments for assessment and remedial coaching after every month or two. Hence to make it easier for them we decided to start a centre in our school premises. The in-house and outside school students are charged a minimal fee here because they come from economically weaker sections. Those who cannot afford it are given free assessment and remedial coaching as well by our learning centre. We want more and more students to benefit from this centre."
