An e-ticketing system, bringing all of the city's public transport systems under a single ticket umbrella, is all set to be rolled out, said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday.

"The transport grid will be developed on global lines. The government will introduce a single ticket for multiple modes of transport in Mumbai. We have already identified a company in this regard," Fadnavis said, during his visit to dna office in Mumbai on Sunday evening.

He added that the Unified Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMMTA) model will cut more than 20 different types of fare exercised in the financial capital. "Work is on to integrate train and bus services and introduce a single ticketing system. Various departments are also working with the Central transport ministry to develop a business case for integrated ticketing," Fadnavis said.

UMMTA was proactively chased by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government after it took over the state's reigns in 2014. The government had announced to set up a transport grid in the city – on a single ticket – with an eye on the proposed 108km Metro corridor and the existing suburban railway to play the main role in the modus.

"The monorail and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST)-run bus services will act as feeder transport systems. Plans are also afoot to integrate cabs in the second phase," the chief minister said, adding that the one-card or one-ticket system will not only enable Mumbaikars to choose any mode of transport and travel with convenience, but also ease visits of tourists to the city.

According to Fadnavis, plans are also been worked out to put the single-ticket system on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) scheme. "Tickets can be accessed on cellphones and people can avail contact-less payments," he added.

The chief secretary chairs the UMMTA, which will work under the Mumbai Metropolitan Planning Committee. The authority has 24 other members, including additional chief secretary from the Urban Development Department (UDD), chief secretaries from planning, revenue, transport, general manager of Railways and the BMC commissioner. Most megacities of the world, including Bangkok, London, New York and Singapore, already have such integrated systems in operation.
