The Maharashtra government has notified the policy to use Dadar's Shivaji Park for non-sport activities for 45 days against the earlier 30.

The state made the amendment in the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, increasing the number of days the park can be used as per the Act, under which the function of a 'playground' was altered and religious functions and public meetings were allowed.

According to the notification, all these functions — political, religious and cultural — have to adhere to the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rule 2000, as per which the sound level can't exceed above the ambient noise standards for the area or 75 dB.

The state government had recently published the notice in newspapers, inviting applications for the use of Shivaji Park. January 14 and 15 are reserved for Balmohan School's children's day, 10 days for Republic Day parade, five days for the Maharashtra Day function, three days for Ganesh immersion and seven days for Dr BR Ambedkar death anniversary function. While seven days are reserved for the Dussehra rally, the Marathi language day and remaining six days will be decided by the state government.

"The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner will follow all guidelines and issue permissions for the various functions. Police permission is also mandatory for the use of Shivaji Park. The civic chief will monitor all activities on the ground as directed by the Bombay High Court. Noise generated from a function should be kept down so that it does not affect the area's residents," stated the circular.

Shivaji Park was declared a silence zone in 2010. The court had said that though political parties and organisations had the right to assemble for religious and cultural events, they had an obligation to adhere to noise pollution norms.

Earlier, the court had directed that Shivaji Park not be used for non-sporting activity without its order except on four days, including the Republic Day and the Independence Day.
