Back-to-back lies about speaking to and having spoken to Sheena Bora is what led Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths to arrest main accused Indrani Mukerjea's husband Peter. As per the statement of Peter's son Rahul, one time Peter had told him that he will speak to Sheena and another time had said he's already talked to her, but the fact was that she was already dead then, officers said.

According to Rahul's statement, following Sheena's "disappearance", he had made been making inquiries about her with all her family members. Rahul claimed that when he spoke to Peter, asking him her whereabouts, Peter had told him that he had spoken to her and that she is happily settled in the US.

"In July 2012, when Rahul wanted to vacate the rented flat, where he had stayed with Sheena and get the deposit back, the landlady had asked for Sheena's written consent as the two had taken it on rent jointly. Rahul, in his statement, claimed that he had informed Peter about it, after which the latter had said he would talk to Sheena. Our probe revealed that Indrani got a letter written bearing Sheena's forged signature and sent that to the landlady," said a CBI officer.

Peter's claim that he has spoken to Sheena and that she's in the US and later saying he will speak to her about the rent issue made investigators suspicious. He was then questioned, but when he could not give satisfactory replies, the agency went ahead and took him in custody for interrogation.

Sheena, who was engaged to Rahul, Peter's son from an earlier marriage, was allegedly murdered on April 24, 2012. The 24-year-old was allegedly strangulated in a car and her body burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad, about 84km from Mumbai. Her purported remains were found a month later and buried by the police, who treated the body as unclaimed. The police first arrested Shyamvar Rai and later Sheena's mother Indrani and then her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna for their alleged involvement in the crime.
