At a time when the Navi Mumbai traffic department is observing road safety week for creating awareness among Navi Mumbaikars, a seven-year-old girl died after she was hit by an SUV in Panvel on Wednesday.

Her 32-year-old aunt and three-year-old cousin, who accompanied the girl, have suffered severe injuries and they are now battling for their life in a private hospital in the city.

Vidhini Lokhande, her aunt Rupali Gaikward, and cousin Rohit were crossing the old Mumbai-Pune highway near Bhingade village around 5.15pm when all of a sudden an SUV, which was coming towards Panvel in full speed, hit them on the busy road. The accident took place just a few yards away from the ONGC Colony in Panvel.

"All three of them suffered severe injuries on various parts of their bodies. A few residents rushed them to a nearby hospital, but Vidhini was declared brought dead by the doctors. Her aunt and cousin are in a critical critical condition," said Manish Koladkar, police sub-inspector from Panvel city police station.

The police have sent the victim's body to Panvel rural hospital for postmortem and are waiting for the reports. "The SUV driver fled just after the accident, leaving the vehicle behind. We have sent our officials to arrest him. He has been booked for negligent driving under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act," Koladkar said.

"There was no traffic signal at the spot where the accident took place. We suspect the driver lost control on his vehicle and ended up hitting the victims. However, we cannot say if it is a case of drink driving," another police officer said.
