Maharashtra: Shiv Sena opposes BJP's night market project

While a few weeks ago Sena leaders had verbally opposed night markets in Mumbai, Sena corporator Avkash Jadhav has written a letter to the town vending committee objecting the concept saying that it will not only make the city unsafe for women, but also create nuisance for citizens. The night market project –mooted by BJP MLA Ameet Satam two years ago – was received positively by the civic administration.

With less than a year and a half left for the civic elections, the rift between the ruling saffron alliance at BMC seems to grow only bigger every day, with both the Shiv Sena and the BJP taking potshots at each other and opposing each other's pet projects. The latest issue here is that of opening night markets in the city on the lines of other countries — a project mooted by the BJP.

According to Jadhav, when the BMC is still in the process of finalising hawking zones and implement the hawker's policy in totality, night markets will only create further nuisance for citizens. "Considering the issue of rising threats of terrorism, eve-teasing, nuisance in residential areas the policy should be referred back for time being. We should first see how effectively we handle it first, rather than hastily jumping into sanctioning it. BMC's license department is under staffed and this will add more burden on them," his letter mentioned.

Raising questions over the haste in clearing the night market concept, Jadhav said, "Though there are many important and relevant notices pending in BMC which have not seen approval but I fail to understand the fast tracking of this proposal over other important notice of motions."

Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has asked to find out the ways to start night markets after the hawker's policy implemented.

Senior BJP leaders in BMC defended their stand by saying that night markets will boost tourism and better Mumbai's image.
