Sena-BJP spar over Aarey midnight tree felling & arrest of nature lovers

Sena today announced that it will approach the Supreme Court to challenge the Bombay HC ruling to dismiss four petitions against planned cutting of over 2,600 trees.

Shiv Sena the alliance partner of the BJP in the state came out against the government's decision of chopping trees at midnight and arresting the tree lovers. Sena today announced that it will approach the Supreme Court to challenge the Bombay high court ruling to dismiss four petitions against planned cutting of over 2,600 trees.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said that once they come in power, they will take action against the people who were involved in cutting the trees and arresting the innocent. While his son and Yuva Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray who is contesting the state polls from Worli took to social media criticising the state government for its actions. Thackeray tweeted, "There is no point for central government ministry of climate change to exist or to speak about the plastic pollution when the Mumbai metro senselessly destroying the Aarey vicinity. This ego battle taken by Metro three destroying the purpose of making it."

He further tweeted, "Many environmentalists, and even many local Shiv Sena members from the vicinity have tried stopping this. More so increased police presence and the way this deforestation is happening, Mumbai Metro 3 is destroying everything India said at the UN." He also tweeted that the 'vigour with which the Mumbai Metro 3 is slyly and swiftly cutting down an ecosystem in Aarey is shameful and disgusting. How about posting these officials in PoK, giving them charge to destroy camps rather than trees," asked Thackeray.

Dhananjay Munde, Leader of Opposition in Upper House and NCP MLC said that the Sena is the partner in all three level centre, state and local body. "Thackeray rather than tweeting on social media and expressing his anger, if he really cares for the environment and protesters, he should join them and not to support the government. On Friday, they sealed the alliance with BJP and dreamed coming back power with BJP in state while other hand, they criticise the State and centre government. People understand the hypocratic stand of the Sena and the BJP government. They should be clean on this matter," Munde said.

Bandra–Worli Sea Link

  • Project cost rose from Rs 660 crore Rs 1,630 crore due to a delay of 5 years
  • 8 km journey to cross the Bandra Channel using the Mahim causeway linking Mahim to Mumbai was taking over an hour. Since its opening on June 20, 2009 the sea link has shortened the journey to 4.7 km and reduced the travel time to only 6 minutes

Mumbai–Pune Expressway

  • India's first 6-lane, 94.6 km Expressway was delayed a following long-drawn legal battle
  • Project was ultimately completed with an investment of Rs 1,630 crore against Rs 3,100 crore projected by private sector.
  • The entire route was made fully operational from April 2002. The travel time between Mumbai and Pune was reduced to 2 to 3 hours

Thane–Diva line

  • Work of laying of new lines between Thane & Diva stations has been moving at snail's pace since 2008. In 11 years the cost has shot from Rs 130 crore to Rs 490 crore. Major factor delaying the project are rehabilitation of 450 encroachers
