The parents of a student of Ajmera Global School in Borivli were shocked when they started getting calls from unknown people who claimed to have found their daughter's identity card. But what was more shocking for them was that the school itself had sent a copy of the girl's identity card to a printer asking him if he could print similar cards for the institution. The printer, in his bid to get more business, sent prints of the card to hundreds of schools for advertising.

Between March and April, a huge number of people called the parents incessantly telling them that they had found their daughter's ID card. The parents are still receiving such calls from people and educational institutions.

When contacted, Ashish Shah (name changed), father of the child concerned, said: "When I contacted the printer, he told me that he printed 1,500 cards for sale promotion among which around 200-300 were facsimile copies of his daughter's. My daughter's picture, her name, age, residential address, telephone number, etc. were put at security risk by the printer engaged by the school. It is also a security lapse by the school. Although it should have taken some action against the printer, not even a complaint was filed with the police."

When there was no action from the school's side, the parent had to send a legal notice to the institution, copies of which was sent to the commissioner of police (CP) and joint commissioner of police. The matter has now been transferred to MHB police station by the CP.

When this reporter went to meet school officials to know the other side of the story, the security guard did not allow entry.

Advocate Hemang Jariwala, who represents the complainant, said: "This is a case of IPC section 336 (Rash negligent act of a person endangering life or personal safety of others). It's a cognisable bailable offence with punishment of three months. The school should be filing a criminal case against the printer but it has not been done yet. That is why a legal notice was sent to the school."

In its reply to the legal notice, the school apologised for the incident claiming that they were unaware of the act of Durson Printer and assured of initiating criminal action against the printer. The school also claimed that they have cancelled the contract with printer. But according to the parents, the school did not file any police complaint.
