Santa Cruz police officials and the crime branch still don’t have any leads in the murder case of a 40-year-old woman who was strangulated to death by an unidentified man at a hotel in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz police officials and the crime branch still don’t have any leads in the murder case of a 40-year-old woman who was strangulated to death by an unidentified man at Welco Hotel in Santa Cruz (West) last week.

The police have released the suspect’s sketches (above)based on description given by the hotel staff. The face of the suspect was not clearly visible in the CCTV footage provided by the hotel. The police suspect that the murderer stayed nearby as he was wearing a T-shirt and shorts on the day of the incident when he came to the hotel along with the victim Sangeeta Sharma. Crime branch officers are conducting a parallel inquiry in the case.

The police said the suspect had mentioned his name as Pappu Shrivastav in the hotel’s record which might be fake. “The hotel employees were negligent as they gave the man a room without verification. The hotel has been closed and we are interrogating the staff,” said a police officer. He added that they are trying to gather CCTV footage of nearby areas.

Senior inspector Arun Chavan of Santa Cruz police station said, “We have picked up more than 50 people from the area for inquiry and have circulated the suspect’s sketches to police stations across the city.”

The incident took place on January 17 and came to light after a hotel staff member found Sharma lying in the bathroom of a room.

She was rushed to a hospital and declared dead before admission. The victim lived in Santa Cruz with her son and daughter-in-law.
