Even as alumni associations in most city colleges are growing defunct, the Ruia College Alumni Association has enters its golden jubilee year. As a line-up of events to celebrate its 50 years begins, the association has organised a talk show with senior sports journalist Dwarkanath Sanzgiri this Saturday.
Sanzgiri, also an ex-student of the college, will walk down memory lane with other prominent alumni like India’s first wine lady Achala Joshi, entrepreneur Vinay Apte, cosmetic dentist Sandesh Mayekar and cricketer and coach Lalchand Rajput.
Of the various things that the association has done, it has established a medical endowment fund for treatment of economically backward students and staff, and has contributed to revive cricket in the college, besides conducting health check-ups for some students.
“Over the years, we’ve made efforts to increase the enrolment of the association. Now, we appeal to students to take it further,” said Lalita Paranjape, member of the Golden Jubilee committee who retired as head of the English department. “This college has given a lot to all of us.”
