RTO to hold licence camps in colleges

In a move that will benefit college students across the city, the state transport department has decided to conduct camps in colleges to allow students to get their learner's licences without having to be part of the hassle of getting appointments at the various Regional Transport offices in the city.

Praveen Gedam, Transport Commissioner, said, "We are requesting colleges to come forward, and on their request, we will conduct camps where students can sit for tests which will be conducted on computers to test their knowledge of traffic rules and driving, and get learner's licences. We hope colleges respond positively."

According to Gedam, these camps are often conducted in smaller towns and districts that generally have just one RTO. "It is possibly the first time we are trying this in Mumbai," said Gedam.

The department will also be approaching colleges to get students in the mechanical and automobile engineering streams to appear for the exams to fill up 1,000 vacant posts of assistant motor vehicle inspectors (AMVI).
