A Class IX student of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) High School died after a fight with his classmate over Rs5 on Monday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Rishikesh Bapu Sarode, 15, a resident of Baudhnagar in Pimpri. The Pimpri police claimed that the boy suffered serious head injuries after he was allegedly pushed on a bench by his classmate. The accused classmate has been detained.

“We have registered a murder case in this regard and have detained the student. He has been sent to the observation home at Shivajinagar. He will be produced before the juvenile court on Tuesday,” senior police inspector Mohan Vidhate said.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 12.40pm in between two periods. The class teacher had left the classroom, while the subject teacher of the next period was yet to arrive in the class, said the police.

“The term-end exam of the school is starting from Tuesday and the students were asked to prepare group projects for physical education. Rishikesh and his classmate had prepared the project and he had paid Rs15 on behalf of a classmate to get a photocopy of the project. When Rishikesh demanded his money from the classmate on Monday, the boy gave him Rs10.

Following this, Rishikesh and the classmate had a fight. The classmate pushed Rishikesh on the bench due to which he sustained serious internal head injuries and became unconscious,” Vidhate said.

Teachers rushed Rishikesh to Yashantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

“The boy was admitted at around 1pm, but by that time he was already dead. There were no external injuries on his body and the post-mortem report is awaited. We cannot ascertain the exact reason behind the death before that,” YCMH superintendent Dr MM Deshmukh told dna.

School principal MA Baneka said, “We all are shocked. This is the first time such an incident has taken place in our school. The two students were good friends.”

Rishikesh’s father works as a labourer at construction site. He refused to comment.
