Rs2 crore sanctioned for beach safety in state, government tells Bombay High Court

The government has sanctioned more than Rs2 crore for beach safety in the state. Government resolutions (GRs) regarding beach safety were issued on July 15, 18, 19 and 21, the state told the High Court.

The state government on Thursday filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court, stating the necessary measures it has taken with respect to beach safety in the state, in compliance of an order issued by the court in June.

The government has sanctioned more than Rs2 crore for beach safety in the state. Government resolutions (GRs) regarding beach safety were issued on July 15, 18, 19 and 21, the state told the High Court. Accordingly, an amount of Rs2,586,000 was sanctioned for lifeguard training for 25 candidates from the districts of Sindhudurga, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Palghar.

With respect to the beach safety personnel, 100 candidates from four districts were sent to the Indian Institute of Scuba Diving at Tarkarli. Of them, 63 were qualified for imparting training in lifeguard training programme. A total of 62 candidates passed the beach lifeguard training and will be appointed on respective beaches.

Safety nets have been installed at Kelve, Mahim and Satpati beaches in the Palghar district by spending nearly Rs4 lakh and Rs8 lakh respectively. Vehicle parking has been provided at beaches in Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts (except Vengurla). In Mumbai, parking place has been provided at Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa, Manori and Marve beachs.

The affidavit also stated that the district administrations concerned have been taking all the necessary steps to maintain cleanliness on the beaches.

Display boards have been installed at beaches in Palghar, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Sindhudurg, giving information to tourists about the Public Health Centres for first aid use during emergency. Notice boards providing warning signs to tourists have been installed at dangerous beaches.

Sirens have been installed at 31 identified beaches in Palghar, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Sindhudurg for emergencies. Light facility has been provided for tourists who visit beaches at night. Beaches in Ratnagiri, Palghar and Raigad have this facility, whereas similar arrangements are being made at Aakshi, Nagaon and Kihim beaches. Watch towers have been erected at nearly 31 beaches along the coast.

An amount of Rs1 crore has been sanctioned by the state for purchase of safety equipment, such as life jackets, bouyancy aids, search and halogen, binoculars, etc.

In Mumbai, 29 lifeguards have been appointed on contractual basis, while 11 lifeguards have been appointed on a regular basis on six beaches. In addition in Mumbai, 6 assistant station officers of the Fire Brigade and 24 firemen have been appointed for the Monsoon season, the court was told.
