Rs192 crore push for Maharashtra police

Govt sanctions funds under modernisation plan; dept gets ready to procure modern equipment

In a major boost to Maharashtra and Mumbai police, the government has sanctioned funds of Rs192 crore for 2014-15 under the police modernisation plan. The funds will be utilised for better mobility, communication, equipment, weaponry and training of the police department. The funds have been sanctioned by both the state and central governments.

According to home department officials, while Rs1,991.43 lakh has been sanctioned for mobility, Rs1,557.601 lakh for communication, Rs2,427.20 lakh for equipment, Rs8,75.05 lakh for weaponry, Rs46.21 lakh for training and Rs363.90 lakh has been sanctioned for the forensic department. The remaining amount has been allocated for residential and non-residential buildings for the police and forensic departments.

"The new procurement will only strengthen the power of the police department and make it more capable to encounter any challenge in the future," said a senior IPS officer, requesting anonymity.

What will Mumbai police get?
The Mumbai police will procure 125 decibel meters, two explosive detectors, 20 breathalysers with printers, 78 hand-held metal detectors, three letter bomb detectors, 100 life jackets, 15 spy cameras, 1,000 9mm pistols, 10 sniper rifles, 33 Glock pistols, four buses, 188 motorcycles, nine jeeps, five cars, 10 vans, including eight prison vans. An amount of Rs2,991.75 lakh has been sanctioned for a women police hostel in Marol, police station buildings, police officers' residential quarters and a dialysis centre.

What will DGP office get?
The DGP office will procure 383 breathalysers, 487 digital video cameras, one satellite phone monitoring tool, 63 explosive detection kit, 63 fingerprint developer kit, 63 narcotic detection kit, 63 DNA sample detection kit, 100 SLRs, 850 SLR magazines, 300 9mm pistols, 400 AK-47 rifles, 300 Insas rifles, 20 sniper rifles, 30 shot guns.
