The police have registered a case after some unidentified people broke into an office at sector 15 of Belapur and stole Rs7.55 lakh in cash from it.

The complainant, Sushil Ranka, 28, is a construction contractor and stays at Kharghar. The culprits entered his office at Shelton Cubic building breaking the window panes of washroom and the fled with the cash.

"The complainant had not been coming to his office for the last three days as he was busy with other work. He realised about the theft after coming to office on Wednesday evening and then approached us," said Meera Bonsode, senior police inspector from Belapur police station.

Shelton Cubic is a commercial building that houses more than 30 shops and offices. The police are now examining the CCTV footage of the building to get some clues about the culprits.

"There were security guards at the building, but they claim that they did not see any outsider entering the compound. We are questioning a few people from that area, but have not found any concrete evidence against anyone till now," another police officer said.

According to sources from Navi Mumbai crime branch, burglary in the satellite city has increased by almost 25% in the current year. Just two weeks ago, a gang of robbers broke into a jewellery store in Airoli and stole cash and jewellery collectively worth Rs12.14 lakh from it.

"The residents hardly follow the precautionary measures mentioned in the notices put up by the police in various parts of the city. There will be a considerable decline in burglary cases if they even read and follow the safety measures mentioned in such notices," a crime branch official said.
