‘Royal’ fleet: Mumbai police will now move in style

Each police station will get two bikes, while half of the bikes ordered will be given to the Mumbai Traffic Police

Early morning on Wednesday, Mumbai's policemen left the people of this city in envy when they took off their fleet for patrolling on 28 customised Royal Enfield 350 cc 'Bullet' bikes. In a stylish move made by the Mumbai Police, these were the first 28 bikes of the 236 bikes, while the rest are expected to be hit the roads in lots through out the year.

These bikes will be given to the patrolling beat marshals. Each police station will get two bikes while half of these will be given to the Mumbai Traffic Police. The bikes have been purchased to make patrolling quicker and smoother.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Deven Bharti said, "The move is taken to make the policing quicker and smoother for the marshals. The bike has several specifications which were thought through keeping in mind the comfort of the policemen using it and which would be helpful for them as well. These bikes are efficient and will bring more visibility to Mumbai Police."

All the bikes are being ordered from Delhi and being delivered to a the workshop of a Vasai-based automobile designer company, Road Rage Custom Builds. Features like siren, Public Address, white and blue LED flicker lights, windshield and four small boxes have been added to the bikes.

Explaining the customizations given to the bike, Gabriel Zuzarte, founder of the company said, "These specifications were all suggested by the Mumbai Police top officials. The bikes will now be visible from even a distance. Even in the night, they will be visible because of the reflective colour used on them. The flicker lights, siren and public address will all be helpful during the processions and emergency situations. The fiber body is light and sturdy which makes the journey comfortable and quick."

A beat Marshal who rode the bike on Wednesday on the condition of anonymity said, "The bike is much more sturdy than earlier. The striking colours make it easier for people to notice us. The specifications like flickers lights and public address are very useful along with the siren. The small boxes on the sides make it easier for us to store police wireless and other valuables."
A senior police officer said, "In the future we will be adding a first-aid kit to the bikes as well in case of emergency."
