Two final year LLB students of the Government Law College (GLC) have to lose out on a year at the Harvard Law School (HLS) due to the result mess at the University of Mumbai. Two students from the college who were set to join the LLM course at the prestigious university had to come back from Cambridge after the confidential results issued by the university did not meet the requirements of the law school.

Both these students had applied for confidential results at the University's help desk at its Kalina campus. While the university did send the confidential results to Harvard, admissions of these two students were deferred until next year as the complete break up of their marks did not reach the admission office before August 14 — which was the extended deadline given to the students owing to MU's delay.

"We applied for the Confidential Report but did not know what format the results would be given in. While the report did reach Harvard, the university could not accept it as it did not have the marks break up. By the time we could approach MU again, the deadline at Harvard was over," said the student.

The students have to now lose on an entire academic year as their admissions have been 'deffered'. "Both the universities have been really cooperative in their approach. But the issue at MU was so unprecedented that there was a lot of uncertainty about what needs to be done from all ends. Apart from losing out on a year, I am afraid about MU's image in front of other international universities," said another student.

Students said that they won't lose out on their fees as HLS would adjust the fees next year but lost out on the money spent on the air fare and stay for a week's time in Cambridge.

...& ANALYSIS

  • The university should have a mechanism to ensure that students don't lose out on education opportunities due to its delays

  • It should coordinate with other universities to meet the requirements and make sure that students don't lose on a year.
