The Napean Sea Road Citizens Forum (NSRCF) is upset at not being allowed to beautify the Vikram Sarabai bridge. The residents said that they had been working to beautify the bridge for the past three years and wanted to start the work when they were informed that the BMC has allowed an NGO from Byculla to do the same.

"We have been trying for the past few years to beautify the bridge. We have stood there and done a lot of work including getting new boards. We have been in talks with them that we want to beautify the place. Only thing we did not do is give a formal written request to the BMC that we want to beautify the place. We appreciate that they want to do something and we do not look to quarrel but how could they not let us do," said Gita Mirchandani, chairperson, NSRCF.

What upset the residents was that they were not even sounded off that BMC was considering or could consider someone else for the project. "We just got a call from a person from Giants Group of Byculla and they said that they will be beautifying the place," said Mukul Mehra, secretary, NSRCF.

Mehra said that as residents, they were to involve school children for the beautification work. "We have been in talks with schools. There will be students from autism school, BMC school and other schools," said Mehra. Residents said that they had decided to form a theme.

"There was a talk in December-January by them. They were to give me something but they did not. An NGO approached BMC and we allowed them to beautify. It is not that only residents association can do it. This is a democracy. Public participation and joint work is expected by residents as well as Byculla NGO," said V Mote, assistant municipal commissioner of D Ward.
