Youngsters from Thane are falling prey to Mephedrone (MD), a drug powder which is being sold discreetly, but openly. To curb the spread of the substance, the residents have become vigilant and with the help of corporators are keeping watchful eyes on the youngsters.

Recently, Kapurbawdi police officials arrested two people selling drug openly near Manpada. The drug peddlers have been active in Mumbra and Kalwa since a month and are expanding to Thane as well. "As most of the societies have CCTVs installed in their complexes, hence they are keeping a tab on every movement and are intimating the nearest police station about any suspicious movement," shares Sachin Khatri, a resident of Eden Woods.

Residents have approached the corporators and have demnaded to install CCTVs at bus stops, auto stands and also at busy junctions of the area. This is advised as the peddlers are mostly active in such areas. The seniors who go on their routine walks are helping to curb the menace, too.

Brahmand residents had earlier complained about suspicious movement in the area. Due to the CCTVs installed at major junctions and with the help of cops, few people have also been grilled by the police and youngsters have also been advised to keep away from such people.

Corporator Bindu Mahendra Madhwi is also being vigilant and screens CCTV footages everyday to inspect any suspicsious activity. The empty plots and gardens in nearby areas are places where peddlers are mostly found and hence, people have formed groups to keep a watch. The police officials have ensured to increase patrolling in nearby schools, colleges and other public spots where youngsters hang out.

Senior police inspector, SS Kadam from Kapurbawdi police station, said, "We have arrested Zahir Sheikh and Mohammed Khan for selling illegal and banned drugs. Apart from having 130gm of banned drug, they also had Rs70,000 in cash. The cops got a tip off and arrested them from Manpada." Now, that the peddlers have made their presence felt in the city both, the cops and residents have become careful while dealing with those who are vulnerable to such anti-social elements.
