The renovation of a heritage garden at Churchgate will soon be completed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The amount spent on the restoration of the Cooperage Bandstand garden has come up to approximately Rs 50 lakh.

It will be restored to its original art work.

According to the officials, the work will be completed by December end this year. The Cooperage Bandstand garden was famous for musical bands events inside the bandstand in early 19th century.

Speaking about the challenges faced during the work, a conservation architect Rahul Chemburkar from Vaastuvidhaan Project said, "The challenge is to enhance the wooden structure which has been deteriorated. Wooden canopy structures will be revived and metal roofing will be done. While restoring the structures in the garden, we are also adding value to it."

The roof has been covered with Mangalorean titles but referring at the archival, where the roof was made from metal sheets, the same will be revived.

The restoration work had started in the month of January this year. The garden is more than 150-years-old. It was the most popular hub of musical activities but post independence, it started losing its charm.

As per the BMC's project, after restoring the garden, the cultural and musical activities will be revived again.

According to Chemburkar, who is the consultant for the project, they documented the structure and did a research work before starting the restoration work to conserve the heritage structures.
