Visit Golden Maharashtra, a tourism initiative conceived by the Maharashtra Economic Development Council (MEDC) and supported by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), organised a Boating Regatta in the city on Sunday. It was meant as a tribute to Maharashtra’s leisure tourism in the 50th year of the state’s formation.

About 50 boats with 80 children, accompanied by one professional sailor, battled to win a boat race on the occasion of Children’s Day.

Looking at toursim as a tool for boosting the state’s economy, Vithal Kamat, president, MEDC, told DNA, “I see tourism potential in various sectors. Tourism related to marriages, leisure, sports, and adventure — as also the kind related to hosting meetings and exhibitions — is completely untapped. We are hopeful that Boating Regatta is one such event that has exposed children and parents to sailing opportunities.”

He further said, “We want parents to expose their children to options other than medical, engineering, and chartered accountancy courses. Sailing could be one such career option where revenue can be generated, considering India is surrounded by water bodies.”

Arjuna awardee GL Yadav, sailor and parent of Ekta Yadav, who won in the professional racing category, said, “For kids, this event is a great launch pad for sailing. Once they get exposed to the pleasure and techniques of sailing, they could easily choose it as their career option and represent India on a global platform.”

“What makes Mumbai unusual is its natural harbour with a long coastline. We are trying to promote water sports,” said Vinod Gupta, vice-president, MEDC.
