While red beacons from VIP vehicles are being moved from Monday, corporators in Mumbai are still reluctant to give up a relic of the VIP culture: 'corporator' stickers.

Even corporators who have lost elections or did not contest this time are not returning them, said an official from the BMC's Municipal Secretary Department.

As per rules, soon after the election result, corporators who did not contest or lost it, should have returned the stickers to the MS department. However, not a single corporator has done it.

The department issues one sticker to every corporator for their vehicles. "Only one sticker is issued and a record is maintained of the registration number of the car in which the sticker is pasted," said an official.

Corporators can get another issued if the first gets damaged. "They have to deposit the damaged sticker to get the second," said the official, adding that sometimes, some corporators take the second sticker by citing loss of first sticker as the reason.

In the present corporation, there are 154 new corporators, which means that the 154 previous corporators have either lost the elections or did not contest at all. However, none of them have returned the sticker yet.

According to the official, the corporators want to keep enjoying the benefit of these labels or stickers. "Their vehicles are not towed by the Traffic Police and they can park in a restricted area as well. In addition, they can even travel on Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) Road, which is prohibited for the general public, from South Mumbai to Sion.

The official said that the department now plans to send a reminder to such defaulters asking them to return the sticker or remove it from their vehicles in order to mitigate any possibility of misuse.
