The slow pace of reconstruction of the foot-over bridge near the Charni Road station is irking residents of the area, in the absence of which, they have to cross the road. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has pulled down the FOB after some stairs collapsed in October last year.

Last week, the local corporator of the area and other public representatives met the civic chief and demanded reconstruction of the FOB without any delay.

The staircase of the FOB that was connecting to Thakur Dwar in Girgaum and Babasaheb Jaykar Marg to the Charni Road railway station had collapsed on October 14, following which the FOB was shut and then pulled down for reconstruction.

The delay in reconstruction of the FoB has been inconveniencing the locals a lot. They said that they found themselves caught in traffic, while crossing the road to reach the station. During office hours, their waiting time goes as high as 5-10 minutes to just cross the road.

Earlier, the work of the FOB had been stalled after high-voltage cables and fibre optical wires connected to the railway signal system were found underneath. However, following the joint effort of the railway and the BMC, the work of the FOB had began.

Local corporator and MLA from south Mumbai held a meeting with the civic chief on Thursday to know the reason behind the delay. A senior official from the Bridge department said that the work had been stopped for technical reasons. "We have stopped the work to check the load it can take. This is part of the process for construction of a bridge," said the official. He added that the work will be resumed in a fortnight.

A senior citizen had been injured after some of the stairs of the FOB collapsed. The bridge was in a poor state and it was declared dilapidated. "The civic body did not show enthusiasm since it was in a dilapidated condition. Now, they are delaying reconstruction," said Parul Shah, a resident of Charni Road. A senior official from BMC's Bridge department said that reconstruction of the bridge will be completed in four months.
