Students appearing for their Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations in the city are a worried lot. They are apprehensive that the state education board may consider conducting re-examination of the leaked Algebra paper. No decision has been taken so far, though.

However, a board official claimed that the chances of the board conducting a re-examination are very slim, as the question paper found in the possession of the student was from set C, while the examination was conducted from the other set.

On Tuesday, 2,88,676 students appeared for the Algebra paper in the Mumbai division and the case of paper leak was reported in Kandivli in Mumbai. Soon after students got the news of the paper leak, they frantically called the board helpline number to know the status of the examination. "I fear I have to write the examination again," said Pramod Patil, a student.

Laxmikant Pandey, chairman of Mumbai division of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) said, "The decision will be taken by the state board in Pune. However, the police are carrying out investigations to find out how this happened."

Last year, too, the Algebra question paper was leaked and the owner of a coaching class was arrested. However, a re-exam was not conducted as the paper had not been circulated.

The boy arrested with the question paper claimed that he bought the question paper from an unknown person at Kandivli station. "The police are investigating the incident and after they submit the report, the board will take a decision," said a board official requested anonymity.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai division Vashi office has also sent a report of question paper leak to the education board in Pune. "If there is re-examination, it will be conducted through out of the state. However, the decision will be taken by Pune board office," said Pande.

Majority of the city students fear that re-examination will affect their overall result. "Normally, there is trend of difficult questions being asked if there is re-examination. It will affect the overall results," said another student.
