Probe into the sensational murder case of a 29-year old woman by an elderly couple earlier this month at their Goregaon residence has been transferred to the crime branch. Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria himself initiated the move after the victim's family alleged that the local police's investigation was improper, sources said.

According to the police, in the early hours of February 21, Jyoti Mokle was found charred to death at the residence of her employers Chandrashekhar Tambat, 60, a businessman, who supplies materials to ONGC, and his wife Vandana, 51, at Siddh Society in Siddharth Nagar. The police had not found any suicide note from the spot.

Based on allegations made by society members, the Goregaon police converted a case of abetment to commit suicide to murder against the Tambats. Earlier, it was reported that Jyoti had committed suicide by burning herself due to physical and mental harassment by her employers.

Jyoti's mother Shobha, 45, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Aurangabad, had alleged that she had given Jyoti's custody to the accused family on the promise that they would take care of her education and would also get her married to a boy from a good family. However, the accused failed to do either. Instead, they allegedly physically and mentally harassed her over trivial domestic issues.

"The victim's mother levelled allegations against the Goregaon police for not investigating the case properly. Hence, we have transferred the case to the Kandivli unit of crime branch for a fair and transparent investigation," Maria told dna.

An officer from the Goregaon police station, who was privy to the investigation in Jyoti's case, however, defended his team and said, "We arrested the Tambat couple and even converted the case to murder. One aspect that remains unresolved concerns a relative of the couple who may have witnessed the whole incident but done nothing to stop it. She didn't even inform the police. But the reason we haven't arrested her is because she is in the advanced stage of pregnancy and taking her in custody could have caused health complications."
