The demand for additional manpower by Cidco’s fire department is likely to be fulfilled by the end of this year for, the state government has already kick-started the recruitment process. These firemen will be imparted training once they are absorbed into the department.

“The physical test for recruitment wherein around 249 candidates appeared has been completed.

Of these, 100 candidates failed to advance to the next level which is the written test scheduled to be held on November 23. Once the written test is over, the shortlisted candidates will be absorbed into the services,” sources said.

When asked about how many personnel will be recruited by the planning agency, the sources said that around 111 candidates will be given proper training prior to taking them on rolls. “The entire recruitment process has been outsourced by the state government and is being conducted by an agency,” sources said, but refused to divulge the name of the agency that is conducting the process.

The fire department has been under pressure to perform its duties due to shortage of staff. Even the opening of Kharghar fire station has been delayed due to the same reason as inviting ire from the residents of the node as well as social and political outfits. The fire station is awaiting inauguration despite the building being ready since almost six months.

Currently, the Kharghar node is covered by Kalamboli fire brigade that also covers the entire MIDC area of Taloja besides other nodes such as Uran and Dronagiri apart from Kalamboli. To cater to these areas, the fire station has only 58 personnel of which only 20 are permanent while the rest are working on contract basis.

Also, the fire station has only nine vehicles of which four are in a running condition while the remaining five are in a bad state as they break down very often causing problems to the staff.

Once recruited, the employees will be segregated into various fire stations in the nodes like Kamothe, Kharghar and Uran besides the ones at New Panvel and Kalamboli.
