As the deadline for declaration of results at the University of Mumbai approaches, pressure is mounting on the Vice Chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh as many demand his resignation. After Yuva Sena President Aaditya Thackeray, on Wednesday, Dr Bhalchandra Mungekar, Rajya Sabha member and ex VC of the university demanded the VC to resign on 'moral grounds'.

At a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, Mungekar expressed his disappointment with the 'unprecedented crisis' that the University is facing as a result of the VC's 'unilateral decision' of taking the entire evaluation onscreen at the last minute. "I am deeply saddened by the fact that the university, which should currently celebrate its 160th year is now having to deal with this severe crisis. The VC should take moral responsibility of the failure and should step down from the post" said Mungekar.

Mungekar said that there should be a judicial enquiry in the whole evaluation process- from tendering to how the assessments are done. "Did the university follow all the norms during the tendering? Are the teachers who are moderating the papers qualified for the task?" he asked. Loksabha MP Rahul Shewale met HRD minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday demanding an enquiry into the whole process.

State education minister Vinod Tawde ensured that the results would be out before the July 31 deadline set by the Governor and also said that an enquiry would be conducted into the issue. He was responding to the demand by Shiv Sena members Anil Parab and Neelam Gorhe that the VC should resign for delay in the result declaration and raising concerns over the efficiency of the company that has been assigned the task of assessment. Tawde said "Right now, the focus is on getting the evaluation work done before deadline and declaring the results. After the declaration of the results, we would conduct an enquiry against the company that was allotted the job" said Tawde.

Tawde said that a total of 5.29 lakh answer sheets are yet to be evaluated across streams which he assured would be completed with additional teachers being deployed on the task.
