Pratham to organise a rally to sensitise people

To sensitise people on elimination of child labour and to mark World Day Against Child Labour today, a rally has been organised by Pratham, an NGO in Oshiwara.

Navnath Kamble, a programme manager of Pratham, said, "A rally will also be conducted in the industrial areas where maximum number of raids were conducted. The rally will start from Ghaswala compound in Oshiwara at 10am to 11:30am. Members of Pratham will distribute pamphlet to the people and spread the awareness against child labour. A meeting with all the owners of companies will also be held so that they will understand the rights of children."

According to the survey conducted by Pratham from December 2013 to January 2014, 4,654 children were rescued from the city. Child labourer were mostly found in Dharavi, Nagpada, Malad, Gowandi, Mahim and Worli, because these areas have the maximum number of leather, hotel and garment industries. Fifty per cent of children rescued till January 2014, were from leather industries and the remaining from hotel, garage and garment industries.

After the survey, till date around 19 raids have been carried in which they have rescued 405 child labour. Seventy per cent of child labours rescued are natives of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
