To add to the rising temperatures across the city, rampant power outages in areas like Parel, Sewri, Byculla, Matunga, Mahim, Sion, Mumbai Central, Lalbaug, Malabar Hill, and Cambala Hill irked Mumbaikars on Sunday morning.

While service provider Tata Power claimed that the outages occurred due to some technical snag that is currently under investigation, consumers, who have Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) connections, also experienced power cuts on Sunday. In South Mumbai, there was a power cut for only ten minutes. However, in South Central Mumbai, it took two hours for the service providers to restore power.

Tata Power in a statement said, "At 10:50 am, there was an outage in Parel and adjoining areas due to a fault at Tata Power's Parel station. But, power was restored within 20 minutes to one hour after necessary corrective action. We are investigating the reasons for the outage to prevent reoccurrence. We would like to reiterate that we are committed to providing reliable and 24X7 quality power to the city."

A BEST official said, "We get our supply from Tata Power and since there was a fault at their end, our consumers also got affected. However, it was only after 5 minutes of disruption that corrective measures were taken. Overall, it took nearly two hours for the power supply to get normalised."

A few people also took to social media to complain about the power outages. Anil Bhikaji, a resident of N M Joshi Marg, tweeted, "It has been more than an hour now that my area has no electricity."

Recently, power outages were also reported from areas like Mulund, Vikhroli, Goregaon, Andheri, and Versova in the western and central suburbs. These outages were sudden or abrupt. During April and May every year, the demand for power increases due to the summer heat.

CAUSE OF CUTS

  • Tata Power claimed that the outages occurred due to some technical snag that is currently under investigation
  • However, BEST said that they receive their supply from Tata Power and hence, BEST consumers had to suffer due to a technical fault at Tata’s end
