Power consumption in Mumbai drops from 3600 to 2400 MW

Thanks to the monsoon, demand for electricity in Mumbai in the last ten days has reduced drastically to 24,000 Megawatts, which was 36,000 MW before rainfall.

In Maharashtra, power demand has reduced to 12,000 Megawatts, which had surpassed 34,000 MW before the rains. The scorching summer heat had brought immense pressure on the power network throughout the state.

The suburbs — both eastern and western — are now seeing a demand of a mere 1400-1500 MW. While in the city, the demand is 700-800 MW. "Demand has dropped considerably over the past few days due to rains," said Ashok Pendse, power expert.

Reliance Infrastructure, which recently sold off its power business to Adani, has a base of 26 lakh power consumers while Tata Power has 6 lakh consumers and BEST supplies to 10 lakh consumers everyday.

The power distributors have proposed a hike in tariffs for which a hearing will take place in the coming week. at the office of Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission.
