Lure of liquor is stronger than call of duty. Two policemen from the NM Joshi Marg station are paying the price for so believing one February night.

Assistant inspector Dhananjay More and constable Kiran Bote are facing a departmental inquiry for doing what no cop would even dare to think.

In February, they unlocked two suspects from the Saat Rasta lock-up in Agripada and took them on a night out.

Kapil Kumar Jagdish Prasad (27) and Sonu Sharma (23) were undertrials in an insurance cheating case. Prasad and Sharma used to verify claims for a leading private sector insurance company, which has its headquarters in NM Joshi Marg.

The company filed a case against them after they made a false claim. Prasad and Sharma were later arrested in New Delhi and brought to Mumbai, where they were lodged at the Saat Rasta lock-up, according to deputy commissioner of police, Zone III, S Jayakumar.

They were booked under Sections 379 (theft) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 43 (compensation for damage to computer system) and 66 (computer-related offence) of the Information Technology Act. The court had sent them to police custody till February 21.

While serving their custody, one night it was the turn of assistant inspector More to be the duty officer.

Using this status, More, along with Bote, decided to unlock the suspects and take them out. Telling other cops on duty that they are taking the two suspects out for investigation purpose, the four of them headed for the nearby Pavitra Bar and Restaurant.

After a night full of fun, they returned to the station at dawn and the cops put the suspects back where they took them from.

"More and Bote did not take prior permission from investigating officer (IO) Shubada Chavan for taking the suspects out," said a police source.

Rules allow only the IO to take suspects out of lock-up. Though duty officers can also become IOs, More was not one that night.

"This act has defamed the image of the Mumbai police," said a police officer.

"As per Mumbai Police (Punishment and Appeals) Rules, they were found to be indisciplined and irresponsible and were placed under suspension. They were handed over the order on March 19," said a police officer.
The police are inquiring as to why More and Bote took the suspects out.
