Mumbai police is reaching out to BPOs, multiplexes and malls to ensure the safety of their women employees. They have been issuing written dos and don’ts to all these places for the same in the western suburbs.

“We are issuing a written list of instructions regarding the safety of women employees. If they are found ignoring them, then they will face action,” said Pratap Dighavkar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone11).

The written communication states that if their women employees are harmed in any way on duty, they could be booked under section 188 (breach of instructions given by government officials) of the IPC.

Police personnel are personally handing over the list to all the BPO centres, malls and multiplexes. They are also asking them to organise self-defence programmes for their women employees with the help of the Mumbai police if required.

“Right now, we are focussing on these three installations as most women employed there have late working hours,” Dighavkar said.

These places have been asked to maintain a detailed record of their drivers and attendants who are a part of their pick-up and drop services. “If a woman feels that the details provided by the cab driver are not right, she can contact the police for verification,” the officer said.

The police have also asked all the women employees to be sure of the route to their destination so they can’t be taken to a wrong place. “If they know the route, they can be alerted at the right time,” Dighavkar said.

Recently, the Mumbai police had provided the mobile numbers of the senior inspector, inspector, crime beat officers and beat marshals to all schools and colleges for the safety of all girls. They will be getting in touch with pubs and bars and instructing them on women’s safety.
