A sealed box that had labels of DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratories), Hyderabad, (DEBEL) Defence Engineering and Bio Medical Laboratory, Bangalore, Indian Defence and other such agencies was found lying in a field in a village in Satana. When confirmed by the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), Pune authorities it was found that the box was fake and police prima facie find it to be a case of 'Rice Puller' cheating.

According to police, on Sunday, Nandubhau Kakulte, a farmer in Kikwari village in Satana tehsil, Nashik found a box in his maize field. The box had labels that said 'Highly Confidential' and had names of DRDL and other defence organisations. The police confiscated the box which was examined by the DRDO officials, on Monday. "The officials said that there are no such consignments released for any defence organisations. The labelling too was not in the defence format. It appeared fake and did not belong to any stated organisations," said Ashok Nakhate, SDPO, Malegaon (rural).

"We also pressed the bomb detection and disposal squad and the sniffer dog squad into service. An X-ray of the box was also done, but prima facie nothing explosive was found inside," Nakhate said.

However, taking no risks, the police took the box 5-6kms away from the village into the mountains and efforts were made to open it with all necessary precautions.

"The box also had a note stating 'keep away from electronic things' on it. Considering the reports of the DRDO, X-ray and appearance of the box, we prima facie suspect that it could be case of 'Rice Puller' cheating.

When the box was opened the police found a bell-shaped item made up of multiple metals. "It does appear to be a case of 'Rice Puller' cheating and such cases are being reported very often these days," stated Nakhate.

The police have appealed to the people to remain vigilant about such scams or cheating, and report such incidents to the police immediately. Police also feel that the box has been prepared locally and they have been investigating that angle.
