The Latur police recently arrested an 82-year-old god-man from Bidar in Karnataka, who force-fed two women from Latur District to eat cow dung as part of their 'treatment'. However, the police faced huge opposition from the followers of the god-man while arresting him and had to resort to the local police's help to arrest him. The police will be filing a charge sheet in the case in the next ten days.

Last month, a video had gone viral wherein a girl from Latur was seen being whipped by a group of people and was forced to consume cow dung. It was suspected that the act was being carried out to ward off troubles and problems from the lives of these two women. The probe later revealed that the place of offence was actually in Bidar, Karnataka and not Maharashtra.

"As per the Black Magic Act, to arrest a person , the place of origin should have been Maharashtra in this case. The two victims were taken from Maharashtra to Bidar by the arrested persons from Latur. However, the Bidar-based god-man, Karappa Mungale, could not be arrested under this Act as the place of offence was in Karnataka where there is no Act related to anti superstition," said Vikas Naik, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chakur, Latur district.

On June 13, the Chakur police arrested Prabhakar Kesale, Pandit Kore, Gangadhar Shewale, Dagdu Shewale and one woman from Dhangarwadi Village in the said crime and charged them under various Indian Penal Code sections.

"Chakur police took permission from the court and got two more sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 347 (wrongful confinement to extort property or constrain to illegal act) of the Indian Penal Code added in the case. We then arrested Mungale under both these charges. During questioning, Mungale claimed that he had been treating people since the last 40 years and did not charge fees. As per Mungale, the Latur women were possessed and he carried out the act to treat them," said Naik.
