Declaration of the HSC exam results on Wednesday has revealed that this year the pass percentage of physics and chemistry in Mumbai has come down compared to last year, according to the Maharashtra State Federation of Junior College Teachers Organisation (MSFJCTO).

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education had stopped external examiners from coming for SSC and HSC practical exams in 2011 and 2012. This led to malpractices in many institutions, according to MSFJCTO. For this year's practical exams, the state board had then issued a circular on December 14 to again get external examiners.

President of MSFJCTO Anil Deshmukh said, "Earlier, when there were only internal examiners, from the same institution, they would help the students to get full marks in practicals. So, it is possible that the reentry of external examiners this year for science practical exams resulted in the dip in pass percentage. But this is also a sign of the results being fair this year, which is a positive."

However, the dip in pass percentage is not restricted to subjects this year, even the overall of Mumbai and Maharashtra has come down. Mumbai's pass percentage this year was 86.08%, while last year it was 90.11%.

Maharashtra's has come down to 86.60% from 91.26%. However, Mumbai division has come up one level — last year it was at eighth spot among the nine divisions, this year it is seventh.

Chairman of the Mumbai division board Duttatray Jagtap seconded Deshmukh and said, "External examiners being brought in for the practical exams is definitely a reason for the overall pass percentages coming down."
