Garbage and its collection on daily basis by the municipalities is an issue all over the country and with changing life-styles, the production of waste has increased manifold. Plastic in all its forms, wet waste, shards of metal and other discards from home form a lethal mixture that needs to be disposed on time which otherwise would stink and spread diseases around the place. Garbage collection has become increasingly difficult as cities are witnessing huge quantities of waste produces each day.

Even as environmentalists propagate the use of more eco-friendly products and packaging, civic officials have to grapple with the immediate issue of garbage collection and disposal.

Dr Babasaheb Rajale, deputy municipal commissioner, Solid Waste Management (SWM), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), speaks to iamin about making garbage collection and transportation more efficient:

What major plans is your department working on, at the moment?
Navi Mumbai has a population of more than 11 lakh citizens, including the floating population, mainly around the APMC area in Vashi. There is a lot of garbage generated in the city. We plan to start door-to-door garbage collection and are in the process of figuring out the logistics for it. We are also placing garbage bins in schools, markets and all other public places. To reduce the stink, we encourage the use of closed compactors that will be used by our contractors to transport garbage to landfill areas.

In what way can residents co-operate in this process?
Residents must learn about the segregation of waste. We have urged residents to minimise the garbage generated and learn to segregate their wet and dry waste. We will provide residents with two different kinds of dustbins to assist them in the task. Also, people must treat public places as their home and avoid littering.

What is the NMMC doing to create awareness about garbage disposal?
We will tie up with various NGOs, schools, colleges and housing societies to create awareness about garbage disposal. We will educate citizens about segregation and recycling of waste. We will also create awareness about littering on the roads.
