Damaging selfie points while clicking photos could prove costly for visitors at Byculla Zoo. The civic body has decided to levy a heavy fine on those found damaging selfie points and entering prohibited areas of the zoo to click selfies.

According to civic officials, if visitors are found damaging zoo property while taking selfies, they can be fined up to Rs 5000.

Eleven new selfie points were set up inside the zoo by the civic body for visitors as part of a plan to revamp the zoo.

“We have noticed that some of the visitors enter the prohibited area to take selfies and even damaged selfie points while taking photos. Currently, there is a provision for a fine, but the amount is very low and won’t serve as a deterrent,” said an official, adding that the fine will be increased to discipline visitors.

“We will continue the current penalty. However, it can be increased up to Rs 5000 depending on the nature and extent of the damage caused,” said the official.

In days to come, there is expected to be higher footfall at the zoo as the civic body is set to start work on 17 new animal enclosures. “This penalty has been imposed to prevent visitors from damaging property,” added the official.
