Infertility is a growing problem in today's society, and experts say that in the last few years, a sedentary and fast-paced lifestyle, and obesity have made a significant impact on reproductive phases of both, men and women. As per a 2012 report from the International Institute of Population Sciences, it is estimated that of the 60-80 million couples suffering from infertility globally every year, between 15- 20 million are in India alone.

On Monday, Metropolis Healthcare Mumbai released a reproductive health report of city women that showed startling results. Out of the 29,621 samples processed, over 14,807 samples (49.9%) ranked in the bottom two rungs of the fertility index.

The Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) test, or more popularly known as the Ovarian Reserve Test, gives a fair indication of a women's fertility. Over 54% of the women in the age group of 30-35 who underwent the AMH test had low or extremely low levels of AMH. The same was the case with more than 38% of women in the age group of 26-30 years.

Dr Sonali Kolte, general manager, Medico Marketing, Metropolis Healthcare said that nowadays, women are getting married late and plan their pregnancy within 3-5 years of marriage.

Commenting on the study, she added: "Most women opt for contraception to avoid pregnancy. It is important that women understand their ovarian reserve before they take this decision. This only helps them take a better decision and avoid unnecessary stress when they plan to conceive."

Explaining the AMH test, she said: "It is a multi-purpose test and increased levels may also suggest conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The test is also used to find out the age of menopause. It also helps the IVF specialist to determine the outcome of infertility, whether certain medications will work, and as per what dosage."

The doctor also said that good AMH levels are indicators of higher chances of live birth. It also helps to identify chances of fertility after endometrioma surgery – which is caused by endometriosis, and is formed when a tiny patch of endometrial tissue (the mucous membrane that makes up the inner layer of the uterine wall) bleeds, sloughs off, becomes transplanted, and grows inside the ovaries.
