Just ahead of the commencement of the academic year, parents are protesting against fee hikes. One such school, which undertakes fee hikes every year is Rustomjee Troopers School at Dahisar. Parents of the school have given a written complaint to deputy director of school education that the school increase fess by 10% every year and forces parents to buy books and uniforms from school, charging a hefty fee from them.

According to the letter, which was sent on April 23 to the deputy director of school education, the school did not just charge Rs 50,000 parents as donation, which is prohibited under the Capitation Fee Act, but is also charging money for admission fee, late fee, computer fee, and other extra charges and also forcing parents to buy books and uniforms from particular shops that charge more than the market price.

After the parents' protest over the fee hike, the school has advanced the date for payment of admission fee to April 30, from July 2018. According to the parents, the term fee has been increased 40% from Rs 2,575 to up to Rs 3,600.

A parent said: "The school in the name of registration fee is charging parents Rs 50,000, which is an indirect donation. This amount is charged in pre-primary, and now will be charged again for class I and also when child goes to class 6."

The parents this month also met Education Minister Vinod Tawde, and put forth their grievance in front of him.

"The minister informed the school officials who were also present in the meeting that they cannot hike the fee by more than 7.5%, if they are increasing the fee every year. Tawde advised parents to approach the Divisional Fee Regulation Committee (DFRC), if the school is not ready to listen," a parent further added.
