In order to raise their objections about the issue of arbitrary fee hikes and the lack of regulation from the government, more than ten parents associations from the city would be a part of the ‘nationwide parents protest day’.

Several parents across the city would do a silent protest outside the office of the deputy director on February 3 to raise their concerns over the poor implementation of the Fee Regulation Act and to demand the redressal of fee-related complaints in the state schools. Parents from over 19 places in the country including Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, etc would be a part of the protest on the same day.

In Mumbai, some of the prominent parents’ groups like the PTA United forum and the India-wide Parents Association would demand the state government to implement the fee regulation act and strengthen the District Fee Regulation Committee to act in cases of fee disputes of private schools.

In May 2017, the state government formed an 11-member committee to recommend changes in the existing Fee Regulation Act. However nearly eight months after the committee was formed, it is yet to suggest any changes.

“With the admission season kicking in, most private schools would hike their fees like every year. In such cases, parents have nowhere to go to as the DFRC in its current form is toothless. Through the protest, we would urge the government to take up the issue on a priority basis” said Anubha Sahai, President of the India-wide Parents Association.
