Even as the HSC question papers leak saga continues, the Vashi police have seized 28 mobile phones from people hailing from different parts of Mumbai on Monday in connection with the leak on WhatsApp. The phones were reportedly used to send and receive question papers during the initial stage of the leak.

The police also arrested four persons, including three students and a private tutor, involved in the case on Sunday and Monday morning.

The Vashi police has sent the phones to a forensic lab for further investigation. Chetan Kakade, Police Inspector (Crime) of Vashi police station, said, "Most of the phones belonged to students," adding that they expect to seize more phones in the coming days.

Kakade said they expect to receive the lab report in the next two to three days, and will then be able to take the investigation further. However, a separate probe is already on.

"As these phones were used during the primary stage of the paper leak to circulate images of papers, the forensic test will help lead us to the main accused of the crime racket," said a senior cyber cell officer of the Navi Mumbai police.

Meanwhile, the accused have been remanded in police custody till March 9.

The Khar police on Monday detained a 17-year-old student at MMK College in Bandra after a security guard detained him for 'suspicious activities', after which the centre head informed the police. "We have apprehended the student and are probing to find out if he was involved in the Maths paper leak as well as the other leaks," said Ramchandra Jadhav, Senior Inspector, Khar police station.

After the Marathi paper leaked, the Mumbai division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), which conducts the Class 12 exams, filed a complaint with the Vashi police.

The police, along with the Vashi cyber cell and crime branch, initiated an investigation and arrested four people. The accused have been identified as Rahul Bachelal Bhaskar (22) and Azharuddin Kamaruddin Shaikh (20), both residents of Malvani in Malad, Aman Mohammad Islam Shaikh (19), an HSC external student, and Suresh Vimalchand Jha (26), both residents of Kandivli in Mumbai.
