Larsen & Toubro, Phoenix Mill, Sahara Hotel, Lokhandwala Infra, Nirmal Lifestyles, Kohinoor Planet, Apollo Mill, HDIL, Crown Mill, are on the top of the list of defaulters who have failed to pay property tax to the BMC till the beginning of this financial year.

According to a list of top property tax defaulters compiled by the civic body, private firms in Mumbai owe Rs 113.25 crore to BMC as property tax. The list provided to the chairman of BMC’s improvements committee, Anant Nar of Shiv Sena, names nine private companies which have failed to pay property tax ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 7 crore. Besides these nine companies, 100 other companies have failed to pay property tax of Rs 17 crore.

“The civic administration provided me names of only top nine defaulters. I have asked them to provide me details of the other 100 companies too at the earliest. After closure of Octroi, the collection from property tax is the only major revenue for BMC. The civic body should make a strategy to collect property taxes from these defaulters. I will pursue this matter and have called for a meeting to know why there is delay in collection,” said Nar.
