After chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's decision of scrapping the draft development plan for Mumbai on Tuesday, opposition parties immediately scrambled to say it was a people's victory.

It was the "public outcry" against the plan that forced the CM to scrap it, party leaders said.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray was among those who welcomed the state government's decision. Pointing out that approximately Rs12 crore of public money had been spent on the plan, he demanded that action be taken against the officials responsible for the mess, even if the responsibility went right up till the municipal commissioner.

The DP has been cancelled because of opposition from the Marathi manoos and the MNS, Raj added.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik reiterated that this was purely a public victory. "Through this new DP, the ruling parties in BMC wanted to give away huge chunks of land to builders. And it would have also disturbed the ecology; therefore, people came out on the streets against the DP. They realised this conspiracy and, hence, vehemently opposed the plan. Government succumbed to the pressure of people's outrage," Malik said.

He also alleged that the same DP was approved in the BMC's general body meeting. "It shows that both parties, the BJP and Sena, are hand in glove and wanted to cheat people by ushering their land and converting non-development zones into development ones. So now, we will keep eye on the upcoming DP. If they do any mischief, protests will be carried out again," Malik added.

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said because of the draft DP property prices had shot up. "It was anti-common man and pro-builder. People smelt the rat so they opposed it. It is people's victory and no one else should take the credit for it," Sawant said.
